So, it’s really you have to do the prep, you have to have that ready, and you’re sober toolkit. Yeah, I mean, that’s so interesting because I interviewed Claire, on this podcast as well and reached out to her pretty much because the sober diaries was also really important in helping me decide to stop drinking. And it’s also one of the first books that I recommend, especially to working women or women who have been in the working world previously with smaller children. Yeah, because I think you’re exactly right. You know, they’re, you know, our spectrum of gray area drinkers.
So be patient with yourself and your loved ones, and try to find ways to improve your relationships in tandem with your alcohol-free goal. You can also consider couple or family therapy, support groups, or self-help books. I tell my clients to think of cravings and slips as important data—what can you learn from them? What factors (people/places/feelings/activities) were related to your drinking or wanting to drink? How can you deal with those things differently in the future?
Alcohol takes time to leave the body
And I knew, you know, it’s good to have that great big large support system. But you know, when it comes to things, I think, when you’re going through something hard, or when you really need people to relate to, um, to find people who are even more like you. So it was really important for me to have, we have a women’s page, we have a men’s page, we have an LGBTQIA page, we have a biopic page. And these are all run by people who are actually in those communities and who actually identify as Um, as those chapters, you know, and we’re working on meetings, and so it’s really an all-encompassing community. But it’s just about, you know, being supportive and being positive and realizing that there’s a better way of living. And you know, you’re going to be supported and not judged, no matter if you choose to stay if you choose to go, if you come back and forth, you know, you’re always welcome.
You know, I’ve done so much work in the past five years. Binge drinking puts you at risk of short- and long-term health problems. These problems include hangovers, injuries, overdoses, alcohol use disorder, heart and liver disease, and cancer. And we know that certainly young people are initiating drinking later. So I think, yeah, there’s a whole kind of raft of changes that have moved young people back into the home or kept them in the home for longer and more where they’re socializing externally less.

Like I was always told, like, you are so smart, you are so pretty You are so this, and then you really come to believe that this is what I am, this is this identifies me right. And then if I’m not good at it, then I must just suck at it. And so I’m the kind of person and I’m trying to I’m this is where I’m in a fixed mindset, and I’m trying to grow. I’m I what, I’m not good at something, I just don’t do it. You know, because, one back in the day, I didn’t even know that the reason I woke up at 3am, every night was not because I had insomnia was because I was drinking. And that was, you know, a physical effect that I didn’t even realize, you know, with your heart pounding and anxiety and not being able to fall asleep again, till four or five in the morning.
Yeah, I love that because I actually, so we quit drinking about the same time I just hit five years, a couple weeks ago. And when I first kind of was like, oh shit, I have a major issue with drinking, and I might actually have to stop and fuck, this is my worst-case scenario with eight years ago. And so at that time, I found some, like, secret private Facebook group, where people were, you know, trying to go booze free, and that was https://ecosoberhouse.com/ huge for me. But when I first posted there and connected, you know, there really was only a, maybe a couple other things, but a was the main way. So, you know, a woman who lived in Seattle, I was in Seattle, she was around my age, you know, seem to have very similar interests. You know, she was a lawyer, I worked in corporate, she was four months sober and going to a so she kind of was like, you want to come with me to a meeting?
Support groups
Everything they need, they can get through streaming or through apps, et cetera, that it’s just a reduction in adventurousness. Maybe I can put it that way, that we’re seeing. The idea that young people can’t really have downtime in the same way that they used to.
- And again, I’ll have clients sometimes will say to me, I don’t really need to, you know, join the sober club or find a tribe of any kind because my partner’s really supportive.
- But you’d need to be aware to even ask yourself that question.
- You know, I mean, I remember when I told my psychiatrist that I was leaving a, because I literally I think I saw her when I was like three days sober.
- I’m in this bubble, that I think, you know, I’m out in the real world yet.
Fortunately, the effects from drinking too much are preventable. Being alcohol impaired can lead to significant lapses in judgment and decreased impulse control and coordination—all of which increase the likelihood alcohol free lifestyle of getting hurt. One third of all deaths related to alcohol use are due to binge drinking. Spirits are taking off, but I think at least in the UK, we’ve been a little slower on the zero-proof wine.

To help support the growing sober-curious lifestyle, many businesses are working to create an environment that is welcoming to both drinkers and non-drinkers. Several food and drink retailers have expanded their selection of non-alcoholic beverages, including craft beers and “mocktails” — alcoholic beverages created with distilled, non-alcoholic spirits. Additionally, alcohol-free social events are becoming more common.
